In Quebec, Atlantic Shellfish Products Inc. is recalling oysters from the marketplace after possible Salmonella
contamination. Canadian Food Inspection Agency
(CFIA) test results triggered a recall, despite the fact that there have been no illnesses reported in relation to this product to date. Officials are not yet sure if this product has been distributed nationwide or not.
Recalled products, including Malpeque Choice Oysters in 80, 100, and 140 count packages, should be thrown out or returned to the store where purchased for a refund if the process date is August 30, 2016.
Products contaminated with Salmonella
can still make individuals sick, even when they do not exhibit any telltale signs of being spoiled. Consumers are urged to seek medical attention if they are sick from consuming a recalled product. Severe, even deadly, infections can occur in vulnerable groups; pregnant women, children younger than 5 years of age, and adults over 65 years of age are especially vulnerable.
Infections are associated with fever, chills, nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea. A small number of infected individuals can go on to develop chronic pains in their joints, irritation of the eyes, and painful urination, a condition called Reiter's Syndrome; it can last for months or years, sometimes leading to chronic arthritis, which is difficult to treat.
According to the CFIA, “The Government of Canada estimates that there are about 4 million cases of foodborne illness in Canada every year. Many foodborne illnesses can be prevented by following these safe food-handling practices: cook, clean, chill and separate.”
If a product presents a health and safety risk, it can be reported
as a potential food safety incident. If other high-risk products become recalled, the CFIA will notify the public through updated Food Recall Warnings.
The CFIA is verifying that the industry is removing recalled products from the marketplace.
