Contagion® to Report on the SHEA Spring 2018 Conference

APR 13, 2018 | CONTAGION® EDITORIAL STAFF
Health care-associated infections (HAIs) continue to plague hospitals and long-term care facilities across the country, despite several advances that have been made in prevention and control efforts. In fact, at least 1 in 25 hospitals report at least 1 HAI on any given day, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

When it comes to keeping up on the latest developments in prevention and stewardship efforts as well as stronger treatment approaches for resistant organisms, the annual Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA) Spring Conference is packed full of information from key opinion leaders (KOLs) in the field, and Contagion® will be reporting on the conference for the third year in a row.

As a trusted source in the realm of infectious diseases, the editorial team of Contagion® strives to consistently report on new approaches to preventing and controlling infections as well as strengthening stewardship efforts. Some of our recent coverage includes how infection prevention and control programs are a vital component to stewardship, exploring successful stewardship strategies in long-term care facilities, improving hand hygiene in nursing homes, and striving to solve the problem of antibiotic overprescribing.

What’s on the docket for the conference this year?

Coverage will be focused on using incentives and accountability to change the behavior of health care workers and different approaches to improving hand hygiene compliance, one of the most simple and effective ways to prevent infections. Best practices for preventing problematic HAIs such as Clostridium difficile infections, surgical site infections, central line-associated bloodstream infections, and ventilator-associated events will also be covered.

Additional coverage will focus on new technology for environmental services to improve infection prevention, exploring a One Health approach to addressing antibiotic resistance on a national level, collaborating with outlier physicians to improve stewardship practices, and responding to emerging threats such as carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae and Candida auris.

In keeping with our dedication to providing our readership with the most timely and relevant content to support their practices and improve patient outcomes, Contagion® editors will provide exclusive written coverage, along with engaging video interviews with several key opinion leaders on important issues and advancements made in the realm of infectious disease.
