Reducing Readmission Rates Among SSTI Patients

Michael D. Nailor, PharmD, BCPS-AQ ID, clinical associate professor at the University of Connecticut School of Pharmacy, clinical specialist in infectious diseases at Hartford Hospital, and director of Infectious Disease Residency program at Hartford Hospital, discusses the clinical significance of the results of his study on readmission rates among patients with skin and soft tissue infections.

“I think the importance of our research is to set a baseline for antimicrobial stewardship efforts at our own hospital, and other hospitals should do very similar things with their own patient population. We set this baseline up and [now] we know where to direct our resources [to expand] our stewardship program.

What our program has shown in the initial stages is that, we need to direct more attention to the outpatient arena, and what happens to patients once they leave the hospital, [which can help us determine a strategy] so that they don’t bounce back in as big of numbers in the future.”
