Welcome to the Contagion Live News Network, I’m Michaela Fleming and this is your coronavirus update for Friday April 10, 2020.

There are now more than 1.6 million cases of the novel coronavirus across the globe. The global death total continues to climb with more than 97,000 deaths recorded.

In the United States there have been more than 466,000 cases of the virus. New York alone has more than 160,00 cases, which are more than any other country in the world. At least 777 people across the state died from coronavirus yesterday. That number is down from 799 the day before. More than 7800 people have died from coronavirus in New York City and State. Governor Cuomo said he's "cautiously optimistic" that the infection rate is slowing.

According to the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, a research institute at the University of Washington, we are just 1 day away from peak resource use in the United States and 2 days until projected peak in daily deaths. The model predicts that by August, 4, 2020 there will be more than 60,000 COVID-19 associated deaths in the United States. The projections were last updated on April 8th and are based upon full social distancing through May.
