Welcome to the Contagion Live News Network, I’m Michaela Fleming and this is your coronavirus update for Friday, April 17th.

It appears that the Northeast region will continue social distancing for the next month. Governor Andrew Cuomo has expanded social distancing in the state of New York through May 15th and other states are following in suit.

On Thursday the White House released a road map for easing social distancing restrictions across the United States. The guidelines propose a 3-phase plan which focus upon gradual lifting of restrictions for citizens, non-essential businesses, and event spaces. However, the guidelines indicate vulnerable Americans will require shelter in place through the final phase, which will leave millions under stay-at-home guidance for the foreseeable future.

There are now more than 2.2 million cases of COVID-19 worldwide and more than 125,000 deaths. On Friday, China added 1,290 coronavirus deaths and 325 cases to the total for Wuhan, where the novel virus first emerged. City officials say that the numbers were revised to show accountability and ensure transparent disclosure of information.
