Welcome to the Contagion® Live News Network. I’m Michaela Fleming and this is the COVID-19 update for Friday, March 13th, 2020.

The total number of coronavirus cases in the United States has now passed 1700 with 40 associated deaths.

New York City Mayor Bill DeBlasio has declared a state of emergency across the city, where 95 cases of the novel virus have been confirmed. Governor Andrew Cuomo has implemented an indefinite ban on events and public gatherings of more than 500 people across the state of New York, shutting down many popular tourist attractions and venues including Broadway theaters.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will be working in isolation for 14 days after his wife Sophie Trudeau tested positive for COVID-19.

On Wednesday, the NBA announced that seasonal play would be suspended after a player on the Utah Jazz tested positive for the virus. On Thursday, the NHL, MLB, MLS, all announced plans to suspend play in wake of the growing concern for the virus. And for the first time ever, the NCAA men’s basketball tournament will not happen this March.

More than 135,000 cases of COVID-19 have been reported around the world. Of these cases, at least 69,000 individuals have recovered and 4,900 have died.
