The Manischewitz corporation issued the voluntary effort on some limited units of their dark chocolate coins and should be considered for people who have a milk allergy or are severely sensitive to it.

The FDA posted a company announcement regarding a recall from the Manischewitz corporation, which is recalling its Dark Chocolate Coins because it may contain undeclared milk, and for those people who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to milk, this could run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products.

This a voluntary product recall and the company has received no reports of illness or injury as of December 1.

The chocolate coins were distributed to stores nationwide, predominately in the New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut regions, during the weeks of September 26 through November 28, 2023.

This recall was initiated after the company was notified by their quantity control department that a limited number of bags labeled as dark chocolate coins contained milk chocolate coins, which contains milk allergen that is not declared on the label.

The specific product lot is listed below here:

Manischewitz reported its all dairy milk chocolate coins are wrapped in gold foil within a blue netting and all non-dairy dark chocolate coins are wrapped in silver foil within a red netting. This is an important distinction and should avoid some confusion.

What You Should Know

The recall was initiated due to the discovery that some bags labeled as dark chocolate coins actually contained milk chocolate coins, posing a potential risk to individuals with milk allergies.

The voluntary product recall was initiated promptly after the Quantity Control Department identified the mislabeling.

The recall highlights the potential geographical impact of a food product issue. While the chocolate coins were distributed nationwide, there was a concentration in the New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut regions.

The company said they immediately informed all retailers who had purchased this lot code about this recall and instructed them inspect their inventory or remove any potential affected product on their shelves.

Consumers who may have purchased this product are advised to inspect their product if gold foil coins are in the dark chocolate bags and discontinue use immediately. Consumers may return the product for credit or refund. If a consumer experiences an allergic reaction they are urged to report to a medical provider. Consumers who have questions may contact the company at Customercare@kayco.com or by phone at 718-369-4600 Monday through Friday 9 AM to 5PM Eastern Time.
