Welcome to the Contagion Live News Network. I’m Grant Gallagher and this is the COVID-19 update for Wednesday, March 11th, 2020.

New York state has taken the most drastic steps seen in the US thus far in response to a cluster of COVID-19 cases in the suburb of New Rochelle, sending in the national guard to put in place what the state has called a “containment area.”

The total number of cases in the United States has now passed 1000.

More than 120,000 cases of COVID-19 have been reported around the world. There have been over 4300 deaths, though the great majority of cases are mild and around 65,000 people have been reported recovered.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel warned that as much as 70% of the country’s population might contract the virus. Berlin authorities have banned all events with more than 1,000 participants.

In Iran, the total number of infections rose past 9,000. The country is struggling with access to medical supplies, and has taken the step of releasing 70,000 eligible prisoners from Iranian jails in order to curb the spread of the epidemic inside Iran’s prison system.
