New Olive Oil Recall, Update on Rice Recall

US food recalls and outbreaks have been newsworthy this year, due to the sheer size of both tied to several different products ranging from frozen blueberries and alfalfa sprouts to infant formula to lettuce, which has been associated with a severe, cyclosporiasis outbreak across several states. The latest additions to that list are a voluntary recall of a garlic-infused olive oil in Ohio and an update on a jasmine rice recall first announced in the spring. Kofinas Olive Oil Recalled for Unapproved Garlic Flavoring

LMSI LLC, doing business as Kofinas Olive Oil, announced on August 29, a voluntary recall of its Garlic Mediterranean Infused Extra Virgin Olive Oil after determining the product was flavored with a garlic essential oil not approved for culinary use. The company said no illnesses have been reported in connection with the product and is offering a full refund to any customer who reports a reaction.¹

The recalled oil was bottled in 500 mL, 250 mL, and 100 mL glass bottles and sold both in stores and online over the course of a full year, making the distribution window wider than many single-location recalls. Anyone who bought the product and is experiencing symptoms of an allergic reaction or foodborne illness is advised to contact a physician right away rather than wait out the symptoms.¹

Lundberg Jasmine Rice Recall Update: Foreign Material Contamination

A separate, previously initiated recall has also been updated. Wehah Farms, which does business as Lundberg Family Farms and is based in Richvale, California, voluntarily recalled a batch of its white jasmine rice in the spring of 2026 due to potential contamination with foreign materials. The FDA classified the action as a Class II recall, indicating a situation in which use of the product could cause temporary or medically reversible health effects, and the recall has since been marked complete.

The affected rice reached retailers in 12 states, and the company identified the issue through two specific lot codes tied to "best before" dates in February 2027. The FDA's classification came about a month after the recall was first initiated by the firm. The product has been sold in bigger, national retail stores including Wegmans, Walmart, Target, Whole Foods and Giant.
