US Company Recalls Thousands of Pounds of Uninspected Meat

Star Meat Delivery is recalling approximately 167,639 pounds of raw pork, beef, and goat products produced without federal inspection.

The USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced a company has recalled thousands of pounds of raw pork, beef, and goat products produced without federal inspection. The company, Star Meat Delivery, of Lucama, North Carolina, recalled products that carry a false USDA mark of inspection bearing establishment number EST. 1363. FSIS considers any item with this number misbranded and unsafe to eat.

EST. 1363 does not correspond to any establishment holding a federal grant of inspection.¹ FSIS classified the action as a Class I recall, its highest-risk designation, reserved for situations with a reasonable probability of serious adverse health consequences or death.² The agency identified the problem during its own surveillance activities.¹

The recalled items were produced on various dates before September 22, 2026, vacuum-sealed, and packed into cardboard boxes for shipment.¹ Star Meat Delivery shipped the products to A&D Foods, a Georgia distributor, which then sent them to retail and restaurant locations nationwide.¹ The product list currently runs to 23 items, including ground pork, pork chorizo, pork chops, beef oxtail, beef short ribs, menudo mix, and goat cuts.3

Identifying affected product at the point of sale may prove difficult. Individual consumer packages may not display the EST. 1363 label, because retail stores may have applied their own stickers with pricing and safe handling instructions.¹ FSIS noted it may expand the product list as more information becomes available and will post retail distribution lists on its recall website once they are available.¹

FSIS has received no confirmed reports of illness or injury linked to these products.¹ The agency is concerned some product may remain in the refrigerators or freezers of consumers, restaurants, or retailers.¹ Consumers should not eat the recalled items, restaurants and retailers should not sell or serve them, and all affected product should be discarded or returned to the place of purchase.¹

Health Risks of Meat Produced Without Federal inspection

FSIS warns food produced without inspection may contain undeclared allergens, harmful bacteria, or other contaminants posing a risk to consumer health.¹ Under the Federal Meat Inspection Act, commercially sold meat from cattle, swine, sheep, and goats intended for human consumption must undergo inspection to confirm it is safe, wholesome, and properly labeled.³ Product bypassing this process carries no federal verification of slaughter conditions, sanitation, or labeling accuracy.

For clinicians, the recall adds a relevant exposure to consider when evaluating patients with acute gastroenteritis. Raw pork, beef, and goat are recognized vehicles for enteric pathogens including Salmonella, Shiga toxin–producing Escherichia coli, and Yersinia enterocolitica. A targeted food history, including recent purchases from specialty markets, butcher counters, or restaurants sourcing bulk meat, can help link illness to the recalled product.

Stool culture or culture-independent diagnostic testing should be pursued when clinically indicated, with isolates forwarded per state public health protocols. Reporting suspected cases to local health departments supports outbreak detection, particularly given the nationwide distribution of these products. Anyone concerned about an illness or injury after consuming the recalled meat should contact a health care provider, according to FSIS.¹

FSIS routinely conducts recall effectiveness checks to verify recalling firms notify customers and remove product from commerce.¹ Questions about the recall may be directed to Star Meat Delivery at 252-239-0610 or the USDA Meat and Poultry Hotline at 888-674-6854.1
