Bacteriophage Therapy as Alternative Treatment

Video

Tristan Ferry, MD, PhD, discusses bacteriophage therapy as an alternative treatment for certain patients.

Segment Description: Tristan Ferry, MD, PhD, co-head of the Infectious Diseases Unit at Lyon University Hospital in France, discusses bacteriophage therapy as an alternative treatment for certain patients.

Interview transcript (modified slightly for readability):

Dr. Ferry: "Bacteriophage is a virus that is specific to bacteria. It goes inside and there is a replication process, and the bacteriophage is also active against persisters because they have antibiofilm activity. It could be very interesting to use it in patients for whom we do not rule out a prosthesis to have the antibiofilm activity. In Lyon, we treated 9 critical patients in 2 years and we have seen a very nice result of this kind of therapy."

The symposium, "Alternative options to rescue patients: novel anti-persister antibiotics, local antibiotic delivery, phage therapy," was presented Saturday, April 13, 2019, at ECCMID 2019.
