Cities Hold a Large Share of the Global HIV Burden

Benjamin Young, MD, PhD, Senior Vice President, Chief Medical Officer, International Association of Providers in AIDS Care, shares how many catalysts for the HIV epidemic exist within cities.

“Cities hold a large share of the global HIV burden because this is where people live; this is where many of the catalysts for the HIV epidemic exist, [such as] population density, poverty, and where key populations affected by HIV live. So, in many countries, a large proportion of the population of people living in the country with HIV are found in a small number of cities.”
