The Epidemiology of MIS-C

How the inflammatory-based syndrome is affecting US children during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) effects are not exclusive to older adults.

New findings, published in the New England Journal of Medicine last week, showed that among an observed 186 pediatric and young adult patients with multi-inflammatory syndrome (MIS-C) across 26 states since mid-March, median patient age was about 8 years old, nearly two-thirds were male, 73% were previously healthy, and 88% were hospitalized after April 16.

Last week, Contagion® interviewed study coauthor Manish Patel, MD, of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) COVID-19 Response Team. Patel discussed how the findings manifested in observed patients, and how this changes the mindset of public health response to the pandemic.

Today, Contagion shares the first segment of its interview with fellow coauthor Adrienne Randolph, MD, of the Overcoming COVID-19 Study program.

In this segment, Randolph complements Patel’s perspective with her own insight into the epidemiology of MIS-C , as well as a brief history of similar inflammatory-response syndromes in children, including Kawasaki disease—of which symptoms were reported in a portion of this assessment’s population.

She also discussed the early cardiovascular and gastroenterologic effects multi-inflammatory syndrome has in once-very healthy children, and what even recovered patients may face in their future health.
